Set on the sloping banks of the Darling River, the town of Pooncarie is a former river port where paddle-steamers loaded with wool bales anchored. This village is a delightful stop on the way to magnificent Mungo National Park, part of the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area.

Pooncarie offers RV travellers a fantastic parking option at Padda Park – Multipurpose Park on Wakefield Oval Road. Lengths of stays can be negotiated, and sites are just $10 per vehicle per night. Parking is only available for self-contained vehicles; however, showers, bins and toilets are available on site. A dump point and potable water are also accessible at this location.

A visit to Pooncarie is sure to keep visitors on their toes with so much to see and do. A great day out is Pooncarie Field Day, a biennial celebration of all things rural. With 100 rural exhibits, sheep shearing and competitions for the kids, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Another popular event is the annual Pooncarie Race Cup Meeting, a classic outback race day for the racing enthusiast.
