The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Limited is a truly unique organisation. It was founded in 1986 by Don and Erica Whitworth N001, two individuals with a longing to form a Club for and by Motorhomers. Their aim was to create a Club which provided a place for Members to socialise, share experiences, and find support and advice. Their passion was infectious and many quickly caught the spirit of their concept.
Having travelled throughout Australia, Europe, U.K. and North America in variety of campervans and motorhomes, there was no doubt that their passion for this style of travel was strong. Throughout their travels, the pair became familiar with various overseas Clubs designed for people with motorised camping vehicles. Without hesitation, the Whitworth’s signed up as members of the London based Motorcaravaners’ Club and the California based Good Sam Club. The possibility of having a similar Club based in Australia kept floating in and out of Don’s mind.
One sparkling August afternoon, Don was driving their HiAce into the Tweed Mall parking area when he suddenly saw a similar colour and model vehicle driving out. Don had never seen the driver of the vehicle before, but he smiled and waved to Don regardless. At that moment Don decided that he would do it, he would create a club for Australian campervan and motorhome enthusiasts.
Within 10 months, membership had passed 500, which was approximately 1,000 people. At the first Anniversary Rally at Swansea, NSW in May 1987, Foundation Member 600 was welcomed. Membership reached the 1,000 mark in July 1988, with members scattered throughout Australia. The CMCA was incorporated in 1988 and, with expansion, became a company limited by guarantee in 2001.
Today the Club has over 66,000 individual active members in over 31,000 recreational vehicles. Membership includes enthusiasts from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, America, Europe and numerous other countries. We are the largest RV club in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, and the sixth largest in the world. The Club has since celebrated its 35th anniversary.
